Our Spanish language school in Almuñecar (Costa Tropical in Spain) was founded in 1992. The school is very centrally located in the heart of Almuñécar's old town and pedestrian precinct. It is only a minute's walk from the beach, shops, restaurants and bars, and close to the accommodation we offer.

The school has five classrooms fully-equipped for the study of Spanish with TV, video, DVD and all the necessary audio and CD equipment.

The school has a professional and dynamic team of teaching staff, all holding superior university degrees and having undergone our in-house training programme.

Almuñécar is a small town located on the Mediterranean Coast of Granada, which has a unique tropical microclimate, hence the name "Costa Tropical". Although it is a fishing village Almuñécar's economy is also based on the production of tropical fruits such as the chirimoya, or custard apple, kiwi, avocado and nispora. Its location and privileged climate (with average temperatures of 29ºC in the summer and 18ºC in winter) make Almuñécar a very popular tourist destination attracting primarily Spanish tourists.

The Almuñécar coastline boasts over 19 kilometres of beautiful beaches and hidden bays with calm crystal-clear waters especially well suited to the practice of water sports such as diving, windsurfing, etc. Almuñécar Aquarium recreates this part of the Mediterranean sea, its habitat and ecosystems, with more than 3,000 specimens from 200 different species of fishes and invertebrates such as, octopus, jellyfishes, etc.

Also, the proximity of the mountains is perfect for the practice of open air adventure sports such as trekking, paragliding etc.

Eating and drinking out forms an important part of the Spanish way of life and where better to do it than at a popular Spanish holiday resort? Here in Almuñécar there are many traditional family-run restaurants where you can eat fresh local produce at affordable prices. Try fresh orange juice, coffee, and toast with tomato and olive oil for breakfast. Order the "Menu Del Día" (Set daily menu) at lunch time which will include a choice of salads, thick chickpea or lentil soups, fresh fish, squid and octopus or paella amongst many other dishes. In the evenings enjoy drinks and tapas which come for free and are an excellent way of sampling the dishes on offer.

Almuñécar has an indoor market which is just 10 minutes walk from the school through the old town where you can buy fresh local produce including chirimoyas (custard apples), avocadoes, and nisporas.

Almuñécar has been home to Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs before the arrival of the Catholic king and queen in the 15th Century. The castle of San Miguel is perhaps the most important monument and has fantastic views of the several kilometres of beaches of Almuñécar. The towns museum of history, situated in the castle grounds, is well worth a visit if you are interested in learning about how the town has changed through the ages.

There are many archaeological remains throughout the town and along the coast nearby which can be visited on some of our guided tours.

The Botanical Gardens "El Majuelo" situated below the castle, provides the visitor with a shady place to relax and enjoy more than 180 species of palm trees and tropical plants. The park is also used as an open air auditorium for concerts and the Almuñécar Jazz Festival is held here each summer, attracting internationally renowned artists.

The Ornithological Park "Loro-Sexi" (Sexi being the name of the original Phoenician settlement here) also situated below the castle, houses a collection of around 200 different species of parrots and other birds.

The Water Park "Aqua Tropic" situated on the beach of Velilla attracts young people and families to its 18,000 m² of salt water pools and green areas.

Activities Included in the Course Price:

  * On Mondays there is a guided tour of the town or surrounding areas in which we will discover curious details about the history and the legends surrounding the origin of the town, for example, visit to the historical centre, the Botanical Gardens: Parque del Majuelo and archeological site (Fábrica de Salazón), the Tropical Valley, etc.
  * Welcome parties in a bar on the beach in summer time.
  * Workshops on music, cinema, phonetics, Spanish and Latin-American History, Culture and Literature etc.
  * Debates and activities on current affairs.
  * Group Projects and presentations on topics of interest.
  * Every week we offer 2 different levels of Language Tutorials about situational language such as "At the Airport", "At the Shopping Centre",etc. and about grammar where we deal with the most difficult points of the Spanish language:"Ser y Estar", "Prepositions", "Por y Para", "When to use which Past Tense", etc.
  * Sport Activities in summertime: beachvolley, badminton, etc.

Activities Not Included in the Course Price:

  * Visits to some museums, monuments and shows for which there are entrance fees: The Ornithological Park; the Archeological Museum and Moorish Castle of San Miguel; Aquarium; Aquatropic waterpark (in the summer). Barbecue dinner with flamenco show (ONLY ON FRIDAYS).
  * Tapas' Tour: This is the most popular activity among students. The province is well-known all over the world for its tapas; it is not only a tradition, but also a way of life. Students will go to different bars, where for each drink you can taste one tapa for free (for example: a portion of Spanish omelette, poor-man's potatoes, fresh fish, meat in different styles, etc.). In this activity, students will pay for what they drink.
  * International dinners: We organize dinners in which both students and teachers will cook a traditional dish from their country or region. Everyone will taste different dishes and share traditions and recipes.
  * Cooking Workshops: In which you can learn how to cook typical Spanish dishes and then enjoy tasting them together.

The programme of activities is NOT obligatory, so a minimum number of participants are required in order for them to go ahead. All activities are accompanied by a teacher who will introduce the group to new language and encourage participation and language practice.

Excursions
The organization of these trips is made in collaboration with professional agencies and there is also a minimum number of participants to carry them out. The price includes: transport, a guide, entrances for museums and individual insurance. Every week we organize excursions to places of touristic and cultural interest, such as: Granada, Sevilla, Córdoba, Tropical Coast / Pueblos Blancos, La Alpujarra, Morocco, Etc.

Lodging is provided from the Sunday before the course starts until the Saturday after the course ends. Students arriving earlier or leaving later can book 1 or 2 extra days. Double rooms are only available for students booking together. It is possible to come with an "accompanying person", who does not wish to take part in any course but does require accommodation. This person will pay for their chosen accommodation plus + an extra (see price list) and can take part in all the extra activities organized by the school.

- Spanish families
Selected by the school after a personal interview. You can choose single or double room at Half Board (includes two meals: breakfast, lunch or dinner) or at Full Board includes three meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. One wash of clothes per week is included.

- Shared apartments: Our apartments are fully equipped: Bedrooms have a bed, wardrobe, table and chair. They can be single or double (for people coming together). Common areas: Living room; Kitchen with fridge, washing machine, cooker/stove; Bathroom.

- Hotel/ Hostal and individual apartment booking: If required, we can also arrange this kind of accommodation. Prices depend on requirements.
